The Amstelkerk was built in the years 1668-1670 as an emergency church for the residents of the newly constructed second part of the canal belt. The design by city architect Daniël Stalpaert was executed so simply that it was referred to as a ‘preachery’. In the end, the plans for a large stone church on the Amstelveld were not implemented and the ’emergency church’ has remained standing to this day. In 1840 the interior was given a neo-Gothic interior. One of the first expressions of this style in our country.
At the end of the eighties, the Amstelkerk became the property of Stadsherstel. The church was then in a very bad state. Restoration was completed in 1990 and office spaces were built in the church. Since then, the central space has been used as a podium on an occasional basis. It is the permanent place for various orchestras and ensembles, because the Amstelkerk is particularly suitable for chamber music. Walk into the Amstelkerk and you will be flooded with light. The white wooden walls and ceiling, the spacious nave, the daylight that falls from the Amstelveld through the high windows, give the building a clear and light atmosphere.
Since the 1990s, the central space of the church has been used for lectures, symposia, dinners, receptions, weddings and concerts. The Amstelkerk, located on the characteristic Amstelveld near Reguliersgracht, Kerkstraat and Prinsengracht, is the most multifunctional location of Stadsherstel.
The fact that De Duif is a stone’s throw away offers the possibility to combine both monumental City Recovery locations. For example, consider a dinner in De Duif combined with a reception in the Amstelkerk. Since the 1990s, the central space of the church has been used for lectures, gatherings, dinners, receptions, weddings and concerts.
